In Kostiantynivka Teens Talked about Girls Growing Up
A presentation of the book Girling Up: How to Be Strong, Smart and Spectacular are written by Hollywood actress Mayim Bialik was held for the teenagers last weekend in Kostiantynivka in Donetsk region.
A local library received this book last week as a present from the LuckyBooks project, that’s why some of the girls that attended the presentations were already familiar with the content. Others were drawn by the extraordinary persona of the author that they are familiar with not by her works in the sphere of neurobiology but by her role in the TV series The Big Bang Theory.
The conversation turned out to be practical and nothing like a lecture about the famous persona.
The life of modern teenagers, especially girls, is full of morals and instructions which as we all remember from our own teenage years only annoy them. Even in teaching or “I-wish-only-the-best-to-you” purposes a friendly and on par conversation works much better. The conversation in which people are ready to speak as well as to listen and not only justify his or her point of view but also accept the alternatives. This is the most important takeaway for Ukrainian girls from Myaim Bialik’s book. That’s why I chose this very format for the lecture, the format of friendly conversation and the exchange of experience without due regard to objective scientific facts. I would like to provide more opportunities for such type of dialogue. Since we want to understand and somehow influence each other we have to learn to listen to one another. The book Girling Up combines both of these models: respect for the other opinion and readiness and necessity to listen to your own inner voice. This is of essential importance for formation of self-confident and integral young personality, - says the coordinator of the IT company Lucky Labs Irina Nikolaichuk.
The issues of difficult path of a girl from a small town to the career in the capital city, studying in the university far from home and a challenge of being happy without being perfect and regardless of the modern world were discussed.
In two years I will graduate from school and I already have to think about which university I want to enter or if I want to enter one at all. I am afraid of imagining myself in a big university, in a big city, away from all the people I know. But I have high grades and I want to achieve a lot. I felt relief after I spoke about it with someone who already had make such decision. Maybe I will find more advices for myself in this book, - shares her experiences 15-year old Hanna.
Girls were presented with own copy of Girling Up: How to Be Strong, Smart and Spectacular for the most interesting questions. The rest will be able to read this book in the library.
