Participants of The Workshop by LuckyBooks Launched The #pickup Ecological Flash Mob

Every year an average Ukrainian throws away about 10 tons of waste. This problem caught the interest of schoolchildren from Kyiv. The children decided to promote the responsible waste disposal including sorting and post-consumer recycling in the specially designated locations in order to reduce the environmental pollution. A person wishing to take part in the flash mob has to post a photo on social networks with #pickup (#підбери) hashtag and invite friends to join it. This photo should depict him or her taking away the garbage from the city streets.

The #pickup (#підбери) flash mob is one of the ideas which occurred during the ecological and literature workshop for children organized by LuckyBooks. Halyna Tkachuk, the famous writer and the BBC Children’s Book of The Year 2016 awards winner, became the coach of this workshop. For a month the schoolchildren from Vvedenska Gymnasium №107 wrote a book about the waste problem in Ukraine under Halyna’s supervision in the Children’s Library in Podil. The celebration on the occasion of the end of the workshop was held in Smoloskyp book shop.

The thing that impressed me the most is the children's choice of metaphors for waste. I expected something fantastic but they decided that waste is a complex and intellectual problem. Not everyone is ready to solve it. When I heard their point of view, I understood that this thought would be the main idea of the book. The objective of this book and of our generation lies not in the emotional attitude to the ecology but in the search for the intellectual solution of the environmental problems, Halyna Tkachuk says.

Halyna’s new students share her opinion.

I couldn't imagine before how important this problem was. The workshop helped me understand that the problem of saving our environment is virtually the major one in the modern world. I want to contribute to the improvement of this situation. The first step is waste sorting and handing paper over for recycling, Anastasiia Sahno states

According to children, the most important things that the workshop provided them with are new knowledge and a fresh view of life.

I began to think about my daily actions. It is not difficult to refrain from throwing rubbish on the ground but put it into rubbish bins instead. We can improve our future by acting in this way, Olexandra Homa believes.

Hanna Berezovska totally agree with this idea:

Everyone can do his or her best in solving this problem. For example, one can reduce the usage of paper. Artist are creative people but there is no point in throwing away paper every time.

The most important thing is still to come. The ecological popular science novel about waste which is written by children for their peers will be published this year. It will be a unique experience for Ukraine. Everyone who participated in the process of writing the book will see his/her name on the book cover. According to the objective of the project, copies of the book will be spread among libraries, first of all in Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

Now all the readers can join the #pickup (#підбери) ecological flash mob. The most active participants will get special presents from LuckyBooks. All details of the flash mob will soon appear on Facebook page of the project.
