Popular scientific literature is in short supply

Ukraine lacks quality national popular scientific literature. Literature and children's literature mass market is growing rapidly whilst scientific and popular scientific literature remains charity, according to "Chytomo".

Overseas publishers of this segment are variously encouraged – there are transparent forms of support of such books: grants, long-term government program. Therefore, Ukrainian publishers of scientific books still recalls Don Quixote, especially with account of a circulation of 300 copies, the newspaper notes.

Experts of the book market see a vicious circle of problems in this situation: on the one hand within today’s realities Ukrainians are not willing to pay more than 100 hryvna per book, even the promoted overseas bestsellers. On the other – there are not enough local authors and scholars, because the payment is scarce. Printing companies, in their turn, are not profiting from printing small circulation – or they publish books through digital printing that drastically increases the price of the book.

At the same time representatives of NGOs who work with children note: nowadays popular scientific books would be especially neccessary for teens. Together with the translated books that have successfully filled genre and thematic gaps of teen literature, what is crucially needed is manuals that would not only entertain or help to understand oneselves, but also comprehend the world around us.

We decided to fill this gap by our own efforts – says Marta Levchenko, Head of the Foundation "I Am The Future Of Ukraine." For many years, together with people of goodwill we have been helping children from all over Ukraine – with material things, treatment, socialization. For now, together with IT company Lucky Labs we launch charity project on publishing and distributing educational materials in Ukrainian language. Teenagers are the future of Ukraine! And government progress will soon depend on most of them”.

The project named LuckyBooks is to be launched in May 2017 and therefore invites authors, illustrators, translators, publishers, researchers and all concerned to cooperation for joint creation of books on natural topics, and educational activities.
